Private Conducting Instruction
Been a while since your college conducting class? Want to feel more comfortable in front of your ensembles? Schedule a private lesson with Mark Laycock and Karl Reinarz. With Dr. Laycock, you may choose to focus on specific conducting issues in repertoire you are preparing with your orchestras or explore more general concepts to enhance your podium presence. Mr. Reinarz, viola in hand, will provide practical guidance for any technical concerns—bowings, fingerings, style—in your current or future literature. Lessons feature 30 minutes of private consultation with each pedagogue. Bring scores and your baton!
Introduction to Conducting
The clinic is designed for students of secondary level string and full orchestras, youth orchestras, and beyond. Student participants will apply the methods and guidelines of the first hour’s introduction with a demo string ensemble on a grade 1 or 2 piece comprised of the students. Please bring your own instrument. Role of a conductor, Exercises and Patterns, Musical Gestures, Q and A and Your 1st moment in Front of the Ensemble
School Clinics
A skillful clinician can assist an ensemble at any stage of performance preparation. In early rehearsals, one can plant seeds for future germination. Immediately before a concert, a visitor judiciously reinforces and emphasizes what has already been taught. Even in the days following a performance, a clinic may be useful in helping students discover what steps might be taken to polish a prepared piece to the next level of refinement. In any case, the clinician is a co-collaborator with the director, offering guidance and inspiration needed at a particular moment.
Conducting Conference
This conference is designed for directors of secondary level string and full orchestras, youth orchestras and beyond. The first session will present various approaches to festival performance preparation. The second session will include time for participants to conduct a portion of any music that you provide for the demo ensemble to play, as the clinicians offer suggestions on your conducting skills. Receive 4 NDE credits. Concert programming for secondary strings and full orchestra for schools and a Q&A on any string technique playing and teaching question that you bring will be addressed.
