Beginning Bookmaking

Explore the art and craft of bookmaking in this hands-on introductory course taught by artist Samantha Sponer. In Beginning Bookmaking, students will learn fundamental techniques including folding, stitching, binding, and basic print and layout design to create a variety of book structures, such as accordions, pamphlets, and simple hardcover books. Students will gain an understanding of both the functional and artistic aspects of book production. No prior experience is necessary. This course is ideal for artists, writers, designers, and anyone curious about the book as a creative form.

The Art of 2D: Foundations in Visual Design

Discover the power of line, shape, and color in The Art of 2D—a foundational art course designed for students who want to build confidence and creativity through hands-on practice in visual design. Over six sessions, students will explore the essential elements and principles of two-dimensional art, using traditional media like pencil and paint. Through guided exercises referencing seminal artists, they’ll strengthen their observational skills, develop their unique visual style, and gain a strong understanding of how art communicates ideas.

Composing Zines

Composing Zines is a six-week course where students will learn the history of zines, explore zine culture, and learn how to design and compose their zines. Taught by local zinester Samantha Sponer, you’ll dive into zine-making from the perspective of an interdisciplinary artist. We’ll use recycled materials, talk about different illustration styles, and learn a bit of binding techniques, so that students can unlock another medium of expression. Whether you design a zine for mass production or just one of one, come to this class ready to explore your art style and push the bounds of your artistic expression.
