Nevada School of the Arts and The String Connection are pleased to jointly present a special violin and viola masterclass with Dr. Maureen Yuen, Assistant Professor of Violin and Viola at the University of Nevada, Reno.
The masterclass will take place on Saturday, September 26, 2026, from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM at the Fifth Street School in Downtown Las Vegas.
Dr. Yuen will work directly with selected young musicians from Nevada School of the Arts and The String Connection, offering individualized coaching in performance, technique, interpretation, and musicianship. Students, teachers, families, and members of the local music community are invited to experience the masterclass and observe the teaching process firsthand.
About Maureen Yuen
Dr. Maureen Yuen is a violinist, violist, pedagogue, and researcher whose career encompasses performance, teaching, and scholarship. She currently serves as Assistant Professor of Violin and Viola and String Area Coordinator at the University of Nevada, Reno School of Music.
Before joining UNR, Yuen held a tenured position at Drake University and taught at Columbia University, Mercyhurst University, and SUNY Fredonia. At Fredonia, she received the SUNY Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Teaching. Her students have gone on to earn graduate scholarships and assistantships at institutions including The Juilliard School and Indiana University.
An active performer and clinician, Yuen has appeared internationally as a soloist and chamber musician and has presented masterclasses and served as an adjudicator around the world. Her scholarly work focuses on applied music pedagogy, access, equity, and expanding the repertoire and perspectives represented within classical music education.
Her 2023 solo recording, Violin Music by Women: A Graded Anthology, Volumes 1 & 2, was released by Albany Records and highlights works by women composers. Yuen is also a D’Addario artist and performs on a Storioni composite violin dating to approximately 1750.

This masterclass brings together young Las Vegas string players and one of Nevada’s leading collegiate violin and viola educators for a morning devoted to performance, musical development, and the exchange of ideas between pre-college and university-level musicians.
For students considering a future in music, the event also provides a valuable opportunity to meet and learn directly from a university professor and gain insight into the expectations and development of collegiate-level string players.
