SUMMARY:Masterclass Series: Joan Kwuon\, Violin
DESCRIPTION:Register to Attend Masterclass \nJoan Kwuon\, whom The New York Times describes as “fiery\, intensely musical and impassioned\,” enjoys a critically acclaimed performing career appearing with leading international orchestras. She was previously head of the violin department at Cleveland Institute of Music\, where she also currently teaches\, and was on the violin faculty at The Juilliard School. \nMs. Kwuon made her debut at the invitation of Sir André Previn at the Tanglewood Music Festival in 2000 and was presented at Lincoln Center the following season. Since then\, Ms. Kwuon has been engaged by celebrated orchestras\, including playing Mozart Violin Concerti with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra for Mozart’s 250th birthday\, performing the Sibelius Violin Concerto with the London Symphony Orchestra and Previn\, and appearing with Previn and the Prometheus Chamber Orchestra at Carnegie Hall. She has also appeared with NHK Symphony Orchestra of Tokyo\, BBC National Orchestra of Wales\, Seattle Symphony\, Beijing Symphony Orchestra\, Jyväskylä Sinfonia of Finland\, Moscow State Radio Symphony\, Rochester Philharmonic\, Chicago Philharmonic\, Janáček Philharmonic\, Orquesta Sinfonica de Venezuela\, Bilkent Symphony Orchestra in Turkey\, Festival Internacional Cervantino in León\, Mexico\, Buffalo Philharmonic\, Richmond Symphony\, Bulgarian National Academic Orchestra\, Orchestra Europa\, and Busan Philharmonic. \nAn avid recital performer\, Ms. Kwuon has appeared at the Metropolitan Museum with Previn\, the Library of Congress with Sergei Babayan\, Philadelphia’s Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts with Previn. She has also performed at the Ravinia Festival\, Caramoor’s Great Artists Series\, San Francisco Performances\, the Peggy Rockefeller Concerts in New York City\, Krannert Center\, Hoam Art Hall in Seoul\, and the St. Petersburg Conservatory in Russia. \nIn duet with Tony Bennett\, Ms. Kwuon performed jazz classics at Lincoln Center Jazz and the Grammy Awards MusiCares Gala. As an active chamber musician\, Ms. Kwuon has collaborated with members of The Juilliard Quartet\, Jaime Laredo\, Sharon Robinson\, Sergei Babayan\, and Cho Liang Lin on series including the 92nd Street Y\, Nevada Chamber Music Festival\, and La Jolla’s Summerfest. \nBorn in Los Angeles\, Ms. Kwuon began playing violin at age six. She attended Crossroads School and studied at Indiana University with Miriam Fried\, The Juilliard School with Joel Smirnoff and Robert Mann\, and Cleveland Institute of Music with Donald Weilerstein. In addition to her faculty positions at CIM and at The Juilliard School\, Ms. Kwuon regularly teaches and performs at numerous music festivals including Heifetz International Music Institute\, The Round Top Festival in Texas\, Interlochen Violin Institute\, Borromeo Music Festival in Switzerland\, Great Mountains Music Festival in South Korea\, and Bowdoin International Music Festival\, as well as featured masterclasses for The Juilliard Starling-Delay Symposium and the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki\, Finland. \nSigning a multi-disc contract with Azica Records\, her upcoming release of recital works by Strauss\, Mozart\, and Previn will be followed by a complete Beethoven Violin and Piano Sonata recording project.

DESCRIPTION:Dr. Ka-Wai Yu is Associate Professor of Music at Utah Tech University\, where he teaches cello and string chamber music. He previously taught at Eastern Illinois University and Indiana Wesleyan University.  In great demand as a clinician\, Dr. Yu has given master classes in numerous universities and institutions in North America and Asia. He is the Director of the Castle Rock String Camp.  He has served as adjudicator\, held clinics\, guest-conducted and taught regularly at various music competitions\, festivals and workshops in Illinois\, Georgia\, Michigan and Utah\, as well as internationally in Germany and Hong Kong\, among them the SaarburgMusic Festival.  He was a recipient of the Board of Trustee’s Excellence in Education Award at Utah Tech University (ASTA).  He is a former President of Utah’s American String Teachers Association\, Artistic Director of the Cello Society of Southern Utah and directs the annual Cello Festival of Southern Utah that he founded. He has presented in the national and regional conferences of ASTA\, National Association for Music Education\, Historical Keyboard Society of North America and the Southern California School Band and Orchestra Association.

SUMMARY:Masterclass Series: Uli Geissendoerfer\, Piano
DESCRIPTION:German-American pianist\, composer and educator\, Uli Geissendoerfer has been living and working in the US since 1987. In 2009 he moved from his spiritual home New York as musical director for Cirque du Soleil’s Viva Elvis production to Las Vegas. While teaching at UNLV (invited by Dave Loeb)\, his Latin ensemble won six Downbeat awards including 1st place in 2015. In 2011 he initiated a lecture series at the University bringing in over 50 guest artists since. He founded the Jazz Club at the Dispensary Lounge in 2012 (winning Best of Las Vegas)\, which revived the Las Vegas Jazz scene and featured luminaries such as Wynton Marsalis\, Brandon Fields\, Sam Most\, Rick Margitza\, Dick Griffin\, Scott Henderson\, Danny Gottlieb\, George Garzone and many more that performed there with his Trio and Quartet. In 2021 he started a new club\, The Gambit.

She has studied violin with Harry Farbman\, Tadeusz Wronski\, William Starr\, John Kendall\, Mimi Zweig\, and Kalman Banyak. She is the founder of the Nevada School of the Arts Suzuki Talent Education Program (1981) and she has been teaching the Suzuki Method ever since. Mary Straub’s approach begins to supplement the Suzuki repertoire early in the books to ultimately include the major concerto repertoire\, examinations\, chamber music\, and orchestral repertoire. Mary has presented at and has had student chosen to perform at three national music educators’ conferences (Chicago Midwest\, American String Teachers Association [ASTA]\, and Suzuki Association of the Americas [SAA]) in 2003\, 2004\, 2006\, and 2010. She is active as a performer and is frequently a Suzuki workshop clinician throughout the US. She was on the faculty at the Las Vegas Academy from 1994-99 and was co-founder of the Las Vegas Music Festival in 1993. \nMary is currently the Suzuki Talent Education Director\, conductor of the NSA Preparatory Orchestra\, and a member of the violin faculty at the Nevada School of the Arts. Many of her students have been local\, state\, and national competition winners and have gone on to study music at major colleges and conservatories. \nMary was past president of the Nevada Music Teachers Association (2008-2010) and the recipient of the 2004 Nevada ASTA “Studio Teacher of the Year Award” and the 2005 Nevada Music Teachers (MTNA) “Outstanding Service Award”.
